Study in Germany — Your Most Common Questions Answered

For Students

FAQ: Study in Germany — your most common questions answered

Every year thousands of students write to StuWoLi with the same questions about Studienkolleg, visa, housing, finances, and work rights. Here you find short, clear answers based on real experience — and links to detailed guides if you want to go deeper.

Admission & Studienkolleg

Do I need Studienkolleg or can I apply directly to university

It depends on your HZB (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung) — your school or university entrance qualification. If it is considered “direct”, you can apply straight to university. If it is “indirect”, you must attend Studienkolleg first. Use our University Admission Guide to understand your case.

What German level do I need for Studienkolleg

Most public Studienkollegs require at least B1–B2 for application and a B2 level for the entrance exam. Learn more in the Language Requirements Guide.

When should I apply for Studienkolleg

Deadlines vary but are often in May/June for winter semester and November/December for summer semester. Many students apply 6–9 months before arrival to have enough time for visa and housing. See the Studienkolleg Application Guide for steps.

Visa & Finance

How much money do I need for a student visa

In 2025, most embassies require a blocked account showing around €11,208 for one year. See exact details in the Visa & Finance Guide.

Can I work while studying

Yes. Students with a residence permit for study may work 120 full days or 240 half days per year. Ausbildung students have regular contracts with fixed hours and salaries.

Can my parents transfer money directly to my German bank account

Before arrival, the embassy usually requires a blocked account. After arrival, you can receive transfers to your regular account. Learn how both systems connect in the Visa & Finance page.

Housing & Daily Life

When should I start searching for accommodation

As early as possible — ideally right after receiving an admission or exam invitation. Student dorms have long waiting lists. For strategies and tips, read our Housing & Daily Life Guide.

Can I register my address before I find a permanent apartment

You can only register once you have a valid rental contract or confirmation from a landlord. Temporary housing (like Airbnb) often doesn’t work for registration.

How much should I expect to spend per month in Germany

Average living costs range between €900–1,100 per month depending on city and lifestyle. This includes rent, insurance, transport and food. More details are in the Finance Guide.

After Studienkolleg or graduation

Can I stay in Germany after Studienkolleg

Yes, if you continue to a university program or Ausbildung. Your residence permit can be extended once you present your new admission.

Can I work in Germany after my studies

Yes. After completing a German degree, you can apply for a job seeking residence permit for up to 18 months to find work. Learn more in the upcoming Work & Stay in Germany guide.

What happens if my visa is rejected

You can usually appeal within one month. However, many rejections result from incomplete documents or timing issues. We help students review rejection reasons and prepare stronger reapplications.
